Essential Computer Cleaning Tips

Posted on

In our last blog, we talked about the tools you need to effectively and safely clean the interior of your computer.

This is an essential process that many people fail to do. We think everyone should clean their computers! If you don’t like cleaning, think of it as a chance to double-check connections and organization to ensure that everything is in its perfect place.

In today’s blog, we want to move forward and discuss where to clean your computer and how to correctly get into the actual cleaning process.

Don’t Clean Your Computer On Your Desk

Move your computer to a well-ventilated area. This may be your garage or your back yard. You need the dust you clean out to go away, not just re-settle in your computer. You also don’t want to be breathing the dust into your lungs. If the buildup is significant enough, you can always invest in a dust mask.

Let’s Get Started!

  1. The first step is to take the side off the computer case. If you haven’t done this for your unique model before, you should be able to find guides online for doing it right. Don’t look for the nearest fastener and undo it. You’ll be glad if you take the time to do it right.
  2. You may have cables connected to the side panel you’re removing. Disconnect these so that the side can come away completely.
  3. You’ll have a much easier time cleaning if you remove some components. Luckily, there are components you can easily pull out. Feel free to remove RAM sticks, hard drives, and video cards.
  4. It’s not usually a good idea to remove a CPU. The good news is, most people don’t have to. Usually, dust doesn’t make its way into the CPU socket. However, if you do want to remove the CPU, you’ll have to re-apply the thermal paste used to move heat from the processor to the fan. Simply wipe off the old thermal paste with rubbing alcohol and put in new thermal paste when you’re done cleaning.
